Are you currently creating the smile of your dreams with the help of a smile alignment system? Dr. David B. Fisher and our David B. Fisher D.D.S. team offer clear aligners for our patients wanting to straighten their teeth without the noticeable change to their smile with brackets and wires. Many of our patients in Bellaire, Texas have successfully used the Invisalign Bellaire clear aligner system to align their smiles discreetly. Now that you are wearing clear aligners 22 hours a day to straighten your pearly whites, caring for your investment is essential. You can care for your aligners simply yet effectively while they gently shift your teeth into place. Simply follow these four easy steps to maintain them while they create your dream smile.
Step #1: When you wear braces, you must clean thoroughly around the brackets and wires to prevent tooth decay. With clear aligners, cleaning them is much easier. Once you remove your aligners, thoroughly rinse the bacteria and saliva residue off using cold water, as hot water will warp your aligners. This also means dishwashers are a “no-go” for your aligners.
Step #2: As you already know, good oral hygiene is the foundation for a healthy smile. To prevent tooth decay (and gum disease), brush and floss your teeth daily. This is essential whether you are aligning your teeth or not. Just be sure to clean your teeth before popping your aligners back in.
Step #3: You can clean your aligners safely using antibacterial soap. Toothpaste is discouraged for aligner care because it can contain abrasive ingredients that will scratch them and make them more noticeable on your smile. Just rinse your aligners well to remove soapy residue before you put them back in your mouth.
Step #4: While mouthwash is an effective deterrent to germs and bacteria, oral rinses with green or blue coloring can tint your aligners, making them visible when you wear them. Soaking them in denture cleaner or retainer cleaner will sanitize them without discoloring them in the process.
